Big Love for Big Yoga | by Meera Patricia Kerr | Book Review and Giveaway
Big Yoga, by Meera Patricia Kerr
About four short months ago, this package arrived. It contained a book, Big Yoga, a cd, named Omniscient Om, and 2 DVD’s titled Big Yoga Flexibility and Beginner’s Hatha Yoga 1. I sat down on my mat, popped in the cd and started reading Big Yoga.
This book is special, really special. It’s not because it’s our first yoga book review, it’s because this book breaks down the barriers of size and transcends that to anyone wishing to start practicing yoga. As a yoga teacher, I literally have hundreds of yoga books, but there are roughly 10 or so, that I consider an absolute necessity, Big Yoga, is now one of those books, it sits next to Light on Yoga: Yoga Dipika, by BKS Iyengar and Anatomy Trains
, by Tom Myers, yes, it’s that good.
Meera takes the time to talk about “The Evolution of Yoga.” This is very simple and concise. It is also important. Yoga Asana is evolving, changing and expanding as we speak, which is great, but it is also important to understand the history and lineages of yoga over the past 5000 years, and to honor those as we immerse ourselves in the present.
She talks about the realistic benefits of “What Yoga Can Do For You” and offers some really good, thorough advice when preparing and “Beginning Your Yoga Practice.” There are some great suggestions for “Overcoming Stumbling Blocks” in your practice and finding that extra motivation we all need from time to time.
As Meera takes us into the “Hatha Yoga Poses” she goes into depth and discusses the benefits, techniques, durations, adaptations and considerations for each pose. Each of these create a solid foundation to build from. The modifications for each of the poses are excellent for anyone.
From there you journey into a wide variety of breathing exercises for all levels. She explains and guides you through 10 different breathing exercises to strengthen the use of Pranayama in one’s life and practice. This is followed by a wonderful introduction into Meditation and it’s relationship to the Eighth Limb of Patanjali’s Yoga, Samadhi.
What I like best about this book is that Meera talks about the importance of “Service and Devotion” in one’s life. The act of giving is a powerful tool for the yogi and Meera understands and shares the importance of this in our daily lives. Meera’s devotion to yoga is apparent through her gift to us of Big Yoga.
You can take a sneak peak at Big Yoga here, and check out the Table of Contents, First Pages, Index, Back Cover, or Surprise Me options!
The CD and DVD’s are excellent too, but that’s another review, so stay tuned!
We highly recommend you purchase this book, whether for yourself, or maybe a friend that could use some yoga in their life. You can purchase the book, cd’s, and DVD’s at Meera’s website, bigyogaonline.com or at Amazon
About Meera Patricia Kerr
When Patricia Kerr left the midwest in the mid 70′s, she wasn’t exactly seeking enlightenment. What she really had in mind was fame and fortune in the record business, so she put together an all-female band, Ira Gobu. While woodshedding in Connecticut, the girls discovered an Integral Yoga center and began coming for hatha classes, and Friday night kirtan. One day their teacher, Padma, informed them that her guru, Swami Satchidananda was coming to town, and they were invited to meet him in a small private satsang at his home.
It was a meeting that would change her life. Patricia asked Swamiji to bless her little band, and he serenely told her to “give the people something uplifting” with the music. After that, a series of events transpired, like beads on a mala, (rosary) all strung together: She went to a ten day silent retreat to be initiated by Swamiji himself, where she met her future husband, who then got her a record deal at RCA, where she recorded her signature ballad, “Water My Soul”, which she often sang for Sri Gurudev, Swami Satchidananda, and the other devotees.
